Our three-hundred-year-old traditional Basque house nestles below the 17th century Vauban Citadelle, overlooking the river valley and town. The name "Errecaldia" means 'valley view' in Euskadi, the Basque language. The house lies on the ancient Chemin St Jacques, the pilgrim route, and is just a few minute's walk down the chemin to the centre of Saint Jean Pied de Port, a bustling and very pretty market town.
The house has three spacious and sunny en-suite guest rooms with modern facilities. A generous continental breakfast is provided between 07.00 and 10.00 and can be served either in the dining room or on the terrace overlooking the town and valley. It is of Basque fare, using fresh local ingredients. The guests have their own entrance with key giving access 24 hours a day. Free and fast WiFi internet is available throughout the house. Baggage transport and taxi services can be arranged.
Saint Jean Pied de Port and the surrounding area is renowned for its excellent local food, superb local wine and for the many colourful fetes held throughout the spring, summer and autumn. Good restauraunts and bars abound.
We are ideally situated for activity holidays (walking, cycling, rafting) or for relaxing and enjoying the wonderful scenery. For those travelling from afar to walk the long distance routes, the Camino, GR65 or GR10, the peaceful and beautiful location make Errecaldia a good stop-over for a day or two while recovering from your journey or preparing for your walk.
Natural or hypo-allergenic cleaning products are used throughout the house to protect the environment and your health. Much of the energy use in Errecaldia is carbon-neutral, with plans to become entirely carbon neutral in the near future.
Tim and Louisa are wonderful hosts. I got a welcome second to none.
This room was in a beautiful location with an incredible view and a cozy, clean, and comfortable room.
I think (Tim and Louisa) underplay the great location of their home which is literally just outside the walls of this historic medieval town that sits at the French beginning of the Camino de Santiago de Compestela. This 350 year old home more than lived up to my expectations.
Such a lovely old house, over 300 years old! Room was very spacious and comfortable. Free WiFi was great! Shower was lovely and powerful which was most welcome... Breakfast was lovely and fresh local breads and meat/cheese. Very friendly and helpful with local information.
We speak English or French, and can translate emails in other languages.
Within walking distance to everything but very peaceful. Free parking right outside the B@B. I would highly recommend this establishment.
Tim and Louisa were very helpful and friendly - the rooms are immaculate and a lovely continental breakfast with good coffee was served in the morning.
Tim and his partner run a lovely BnB in a great location. Breakfast is traditional Basque and the rooms are spacious and comfy. Tim had good tips on places to see and lent me a map for driving.
We had a great stay at Tim's. The room was very clean. The house was rustic and beautiful with many modern amenities, including a jacuzzi in our private bathroom. A lovely breakfast was provided. We would definitely recommend staying at Errecaldia to anyone!
The railway from Bayonne to St Jean Pied de Port is now repaired after severe storm damage.
